5 Signs That Something Is Wrong with Your Water Line
Your water line is a crucial component in your plumbing system, and when it isn’t working, your life at home can be made quite difficult. A broken water line can prevent you from taking a shower, flushing the toilet, using your sinks, and washing your laundry. Several signs indicate that something is wrong with your water line. Read on to learn more.
1. You Water Bills Have Skyrocketed
Water bills are typically pretty consistent each season, meaning your water bills this winter are probably about the same as they were last winter. Unless you have recently filled up a swimming pool or used a significant amount of water, your bills shouldn’t skyrocket in one month. If your bills have increased unexpectedly, there may be a leak in your water line.
2. Your Water Pressure Is Low
Low water pressure in one fixture probably means that you have a problem with just that fixture. But, if your entire house is experiencing low water pressure, you could have a big problem on your hands. Low water pressure could indicate that your water line is clogged or leaking. When your water line is clogged, water has a difficult time getting past the clog, which results in lower-than-normal water pressure. When your water line leaks, water is coming out of the line before it ever has a chance to reach your faucets.
3. You Notice Water Where It Shouldn’t Be
When your water line is cracked or leaking, you might notice wet spots in places they don’t belong around your home.
This includes:
- Water pooling in your yard
- Water bubbling in your street
- Puddles in your home, beneath sinks and on the floor
- Damp drywall or ceilings with wet rings
- Wet spots around sinks, bathtubs, or toilets
4. The Water Coming Out of Your Faucets Is Discolored
If the water coming out of all of your faucets is brownish or rust-colored, something is probably wrong with your water line. Discolored water can be caused by severe corrosion, clay pipes breaking down, or dirt entering your line through a crack. Water filled with dirt, debris, and heavy metals will also have a strange odor and taste.
5. Your Plumbing Clogs Frequently
Another sign that something is wrong with your water line is that your plumbing system clogs frequently. If the water in your sinks or showers often drains too slowly or your toilets are backing up often, this could be a sign that you have a serious clog deep in your water line.
